Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
