The musician gives £25,000 cash award to independent live spaces

Sam Fender received the prestigious award recently in the North East

The artist has given the complete sum of his £25k award prize money to the trust for venues, which functions to protect the Britain's independent concert spaces.

Fender was presented with the award on October 16 as his new release People Watching was named the top album of the last 12 months.

The musician has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – about one-sixth of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Fender also took part, raising over £100k on his live tour to help 38 local spots across the UK.

The money helped locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to challenges stemming from floods, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations received funding support in improving amenities and technical equipment that directly benefitted performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from concerts in big venues helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has stated.

In recent years, they gave their prize money to the youth organization that developed their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Also the 1994 recipients they gave their award to a MS organization after a close contact was identified with the condition.

"Winning was ample," said singer the singer. "The money was the cherry on top but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the cake. So our success touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT shared it had protected two grassroots venues in south-east England, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in that area and the other in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by a national body and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the buildings.
